Also, do they just eat the leaf-looking stuff off the fruit/vegetable, or do they eat the lighter green stuff as well? It kind of looks like an avocado to me.

ANYWAY, the way the fruit is usually eaten is by peeling all the leaves of and eating them first, then the stuff in the middle. So yes, the entire fruit is edible :D (it's loosely based on the artichoke.)
